Biographical Information[edit]
Jared Blasdell pitched as high as AAA.
Blasdell was 5-5 with a 5.64 ERA his last year in high school. He was picked by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 38th round of the 2001 amateur draft. He was 0-1 with 11 saves and a 1.26 ERA and .87 WHIP for the New Jersey Cardinals and struck out 36 in 28 2/3 IP. He tied Chris Cooper for 6th in the New York-Penn League in saves. He was excellent again with the 2002 Peoria Chiefs (6-2, 23 Sv, 1.37, 79 K in 65 2/3 IP, .73 WHIP). He tied Nate Cotton for 4th in the Midwest League in games pitched (53) and was 3rd in saves behind Cotton and Mike Kobow. Among Cardinals farmhands, he was second in saves (one shy of Scotty Layfield) and tied Carmen Cali for 6th in pitching appearances. He was one of two players to be named later sent to the Chicago Cubs in return for Jeff Fassero; Jason Karnuth was the other one.
With the 2003 Daytona Cubs, he was 3-4 with 27 saves, a 3.20 ERA and 84 K in 59 IP, though he allowed 52 hits and 34 walks. On July 17, he finished Carmen Pignatiello's no-hitter of the Palm Beach Cardinals. He led the Florida State League in two saves, two ahead of Bobby Korecky, and was second in games pitched (6 behind Cali). Among Cubs minor leaguers, he was 4th in games pitched and second in saves, two behind Jason Wylie. Blasdell slipped further in 2004 with 48 walks in 66 1/3 IP; he appeared for Daytona (3 R in 4 2/3 IP), the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (2-4, 2 Sv, 4.80 in 49 G) and the Iowa Cubs (0-1, 2 R in 1 2/3 IP). He was 8th in the Cubs chain with 52 games pitched. The Philadelphia Phillies took him in the AA phase of the 2004 Rule V Draft. He split 2005 between the GCL Phillies (2 R in 3 IP) and Clearwater Threshers (0-1, 7.94 in 8 G), presumably injured.
Blasdell finished his pro career 11-13 with 63 saves and a 3.23 ERA in 197 games. In 234 innings, he allowed 185 hits and 113 walks while fanning 279.
