Biographical Information[edit]

James Hoyt began his professional career at the relatively late age of 24, pitching in the independent leagues for the Yuma Scorpions of the North American League in 2011. He went 2-0, 4.94 in 19 games as a reliever and began the 2012 season with the Edinburg Roadrunners of the same league, making 12 appearances before moving to another indy team, the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association, where he pitched 11 times. He finished that unusual season in the Mexican League, woth the Olmecas de Tabasco, where he put up a 2.02 ERA in 11 games. Overall, he went 2-2, but with a sparkling 1.76 ERA in 41 innings of work between the three teams.

His performance attracted the eyes of the Atlanta Braves organization who gave him a contract before the 2013 season. He started that season with the Lynchburg Hillcats of the Carolina League, then moved up to the Mississippi Braves of the AA Southern League in June, pitching a total of 39 games. He went 3-3, 3.94 and logged 82 1/3 innings during which he struck out 105 batters and walked only 38. The late bloomer was now considered a potential prospect and in 2014 he reached AAA for the first time after starting the season with Mississippi. On May 20th, he made his first appearance with the Gwinnett Braves in the International League and pitched there for the remainder of the season. He went 3-3, 3.17 with 7 saves in 52 appearances. He pitched 59 2/3 innings and struck out 77.

On January 14, 2015, he was traded to the Houston Astros along with C Evan Gattis in return for three prospects - Ps Mike Foltynewicz and Andrew Thurman and 3B Rio Ruiz.

  • Won one World Series with the Houston Astros in 2017 (he did not play in the World Series)
