Biographical Information

Third baseman Rio Ruiz was a fourth-round selection by the Houston Astros in the 2012 amateur draft, out of high school. He played 38 games that first season, 23 with the GCL Astros and 15 with the Greeneville Astros of the Appalachian League. His combined batting line was .252/.336/.400. In 2013, he played 113 games for the Quad Cities River Bandits in the Midwest League where he hit .260 with 33 doubles and 12 homers, driving in 63 runs. He followed that with another solid season in 2014, this time with the Lancaster JetHawks of the California League, where he hit .293 with 37 doubles and 11 homers in 131 games, driving in 77 runs. However, that same summer, the Astros had acquired another top third base prospect in Colin Moran, placing a block in front of Ruiz.

On January 14, 2015, Rio was traded to the Atlanta Braves, along with two pitching prospects, Mike Foltynewicz and Andrew Thurman, in return for C Evan Gattis and P James Hoyt. Those reports added that the Braves saw him as the prize catch in the trade and the team's third baseman of the future. Ruiz mde his major league debut with the Braves at the end of the 2016 season, after two full years in the team's minor league system.
