Biographical Information[edit]
James Deters played in the minor leagues from 2005 to 2008.
Deters was 25-6 with a 2.42 ERA in college, striking out 295 in 252 1/3 innings. He finished up as the all-time Calvin College leader in wins, strikeouts, ERA and innings despite missing part of 2003 with a back injury. He twice struck out 20 in a game in college. He became the first player from the school ever picked in MLB's amateur draft. Taken by the Cleveland Indians in the 7th round of the 2005 amateur draft, he was the third NCAA Division III player taken that year.
In his debut pro season, Jim was 3-4 with a 2.97 ERA for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. In 2006, for the Lake County Captains, Deters went 12-9 with a 3.11 ERA, walking 29 in 167 2/3 innings. He was 8th in the South Atlantic League in ERA and tied for third among Indians farmhands in victories.
Deters was even better in 2007. He went 12-4 with a 2.24 ERA for the Kinston Indians with just 21 walks in 112 1/3 innings. He allowed five runs in three innings for the Buffalo Bisons. His 2.50 ERA and .236 opponent average led Indians minor leaguers and he was one win behind leader Aaron Laffey. Deters led the Carolina League in ERA, .24 ahead of runner-up Rowdy Hardy. Hardy won honors as the league's Msot Valuable Pitcher, though. Baseball America did not name either of the two control specialists, Deters or Hardy, to their list of the league's top 20 prospects. Deters helped Kinston to the best regular-season record in the loop.
