Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Jake Jefferies has played as high as AAA.

He was All-State as a high school senior. He hit .237 as a college freshman then improved to .302/.338/.385 as a sophomore and .387/.444/.524 with 54 RBI and 20 doubles in 58 games as a junior in 2008. He was third in the Big West Conference in average, first in hits (96), 5th in total bases (130), tied for third in doubles (with Josh Fellhauer) and tied for third in RBI. He was the All-Conference catcher and co-Player of the Year (with Shane Peterson).

He was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 3rd round of the 2008 amateur draft out of the University of California, Davis. The #78 pick, he was Tampa Bay's #3 pick after Tim Beckham and Kyle Lobstein. The scout was Carlos Delgado. He signed for a $515,000 bonus. He played in the Rays' organization from 2008 to 2011. His best year there was his first, as he hit .315/.379/.433 with 41 RBI in 66 games for the Hudson Valley Renegades. He was 6th in the New York-Penn League in average, between Mitch Dening and Jason Corder.

In 2009, he hit .261/.326/.359 with 8 homers and 50 RBIs with the Bowling Green Hot Rods of the South Atlantic League. His batting line slumped to .215/.290/.275 for the 2010 Charlotte Stone Crabs, throwing out only 19% of attempted base-stealers. He fielded .993. He spent most of 2011 with Charlotte (.235/.281/.333 in 60 G) and also appeared briefly for the Montgomery Biscuits (5 for 19, BB).

On December 12, 2011, Jefferies was traded to the Miami Marlins in return for P Burke Badenhop. He hit .233/.297/.323 in 42 games as Kyle Skipworth's backup for the Jacksonville Suns in 2012 and earned a brief promotion to AAA, going 2 for 15 with a double and two walks in 6 games for the New Orleans Zephyrs. In 2013, he only played 9 games for New Orleans, hitting .200/.273/.276 with no homers or RBIs.

He is not to be confused with another Jake Jefferies, who is the son of former major league infielder/outfielder Gregg Jefferies. He does have family connections in baseball however, as he is the brother of 2016 supplemental 1st round pick Daulton Jefferies and the nephew of former major league pitcher Blas Minor.
