Biographical Information[edit]
Jae-woong Shin pitched in the KBO for 12 years.
Shin was drafted by the LG Twins in the 3rd round of the 2005 KBO draft, and his ERA was 7.43 in 26 appearances in 2005. He went 1-2 with a 4.61 ERA in 2006, and the Doosan Bears selected him as the compensation for losing free agent Myung-hwan Park. However, Shin suffered from a shoulder injury, and he was released after the 2007 season. He then missed three years due to military service, and the LG Twins signed him back in 2011. Shin didn't appear with the big club that season, and he was 5-2 with a 3.59 ERA in 2012. He went 4-4 with a 3.05 ERA in 2013, and he was moved to the bullpen after that season.
The Changwon native pitched well in 2014, and he notched 8 holds with a 3.80 ERA in 57 appearances. He completed a combined no-hitter with Jung-rak Shin and Won-sang Yoo on October 6 against the NC Dinos, and that was the first combined no-hitter in KBO history. Shin was then traded with Eui-yoon Jung and Dong-hun Shub to the SK Wyverns for Gun-uk Yeo, Hae-soo Jin and Hoon Im. His ERA was 4.11 in 61 appearances with 9 holds in 2015, and he struggled in 2016 as his ERA rose to 5.50 in 35 relief outings.
Shin bounced back soon, and he notched 4 holds and 2 saves in 32 games with a 3.19 ERA in 2017. He then notched 16 saves with a 2.77 ERA in 54 games in 2018, and he ranked 7th in saves (between Chang-min Shim and Jae-yun Kim). Shin relieved Hee-sang Yoon in the 8th inning of the 2018 Korean Series Game 1, but he walked Kun-woo Park then allowed a hit to Jae-hwan Kim. Jin-yong Seo then replaced him, and both runners scored. Shin never pitched another game in the entire series, and the Wyverns beat the Doosan Bears in 6 games. His ERA was 3.32 in 20 games in 2019, but he struggled in 2020 as he recorded a 9.31 ERA in 24 appearances. Shin only pitched 8 games in 2021, and he announced his retirement. He then became the minor league pitching coach for the Twins.
Overall, Shin was 24-17 with a 4.05 ERA and 7 saves, collected 34 holds and 18 saves in 369 appearances, struck out 308 and pitched 444 1/3 innings in 12 seasons in the KBO.
