International competition scandals

There have been several players who have tested positive for banned substances in international competitions; other teams have been disqualified for other reasons.

Banned Substances

2002

Four Panamanians players tested positive for banned substances following the 2002 Intercontinental Cup, causing the team to be stripped of their Bronze Medal; the offenders were Earl Agnoly, Roberto Kelly, Roberto Gutiérrez and Jorge Cortez. All were banned from international play for two years though all would be in Panama's uniform again in the future either as a player or manager. The inclusion of Kelly was notable as he was a major leaguer and the majors did not test for steroids during his career.

2006

South Korea's Myung-hwan Park tested positive for a banned substance during the 2006 World Baseball Classic and missed his team's run to the semifinals; he was banned from international play for two years.

2008

Prior to the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament, Taiwan's Po-Yu Lin tested positive for a banned substance and was removed from his team's roster. Lin would still be allowed to play in the US minors in 2008. The country's woes were not after - right before the 2008 Olympics, Taiwan star slugger Tai-Shan Chang tested positive for Hydroxyclomiphene and was banned from international play for two years; his absence helped Taiwan stumble in the '08 Olympics.

2009

Puerto Rico's Geovany Soto (marijuana) and the Netherlands' Sidney Ponson (Phentermine) tested positive following the 2009 World Baseball Classic and were suspended from international competition for two years. Both were active major leaguers; Soto was not penalized by the majors while Ponson was only fined.

Umpiring calls

1944

Several biased calls in favor of the home team during the 1944 Amateur World Series caused both Mexico and Cuba to withdraw in the middle of the event, while a call during a Venezuela-Dominican Republic game caused one Venezuelan umpire to be suspended from working his country's games.

Ineligible Players

2007

The Czech national team had two wins removed in the 2007 European Championship due to not insuring three players with contracts to Organized Baseball teams - Petr Čech, Jakub Hajtmar and Jakub Toufar.

The Panamanian national team also lost two wins (and a spot in the second round) by not insuring its players with contracts in the US - Valentino Arce, Joseph Guerra, Isaias Garcia, Alwin Pérez and Concepción Rodríguez.
