Biographical Information

Alwin Pérez played his fifth minor league season in 2008 even though he had just turned 21 during spring training.

Pérez was signed by the Kansas City Royals at age 16. He debuted as a pro with the 2004 DSL Royals, hitting .342/.404/.413 with 39 runs in 52 games. In 2005, he batted .283/.415/.361 for the same club, with 43 walks in 55 games and 15 steals in 19 tries. That earned him the honor of Dominican Royals Player of the Year.

Alwin came stateside in 2006 and produced at a .281/.363/.365 rate with 19 steals in 24 tries for the AZL Royals. He tied for 4th in the Arizona League in stolen bases and led AZL second basemen in putouts (62) and double plays (26). In 2007, Pérez batted .282/.349/.413 for the Burlington Royals. He played primarily second base still but had 6 outfield assists in 23 games as a flyhawk. In the 2007 Baseball World Cup, the Chitré native was 2 for 4 in 4 games as a utility man for Panama. Unfortunately, his presence on the club cost them a spot in the quarterfinals as Panama had failed to purchase insurance for him and four other players under contract to MLB organizations. This stripped them of two wins and cost them the quarterfinal slot.

In 2008, Pérez hit a disappointing .207/.257/.287 in 48 games for the Burlington (IA) Bees and got sent back down to the Idaho Falls Chukars, where he batted .244/.323/.361. He stole 20 bases that year but was caught stealing 12 times. He was placed on Panama's preliminary roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
