Biographical Information

Hyun-wook Jong has pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization since 1998.

Jong debuted in 1998 with the Samsung Lions, going 1-0 with a 4.70 ERA in 5 games. In 1999, he was 3-7 with a 5.03 ERA. He allowed 6 runs (2 earned) in 5 innings of work in 2000. He did not pitch for the Lions in 2001, then went 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA in 20 games the next year. In 2003, he was 4-5 with a save and a 4.59 ERA. For the 2004 Lions, he had a 4-5, 3.36 record in 27 games. He was then caught in a plot to evade mandatory military service along with other KBO players. He was arrested and spent time in prison. In 2007, he came out and began serving his military duty. He also returned to the Lions, going 0-1 with a save and a 5.52 ERA in 11 games. In 2008, he had a 10-4, 3.40 record, allowing 108 hits and only 3 homers in 127 innings. That earned him a spot on the South Korean roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

Jong pitched five games in the 2009 WBC, tied with Chang-yong Lim and Hyun-jin Ryu for the most appearances on the runner-ups. Jong was 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA and fanned 13 in 10 1/3 IP. He tied Suk-min Yoon and Daisuke Matsuzaka for third in the Classic in Ks behind Yu Darvish and Hisashi Iwakuma. Jong was South Korea's second pitcher in the championship game against Japan. He relieved Jung-keun Bong with men on the corners and none out in the 5th of a 1-0 game. He promptly struck out Kenji Johjima and Michihiro Ogasawara while Norichika Aoki was caught stealing to end the threat. Jong tossed a scoreless 6th. In the 7th, he gave up hits to Yasuyuki Kataoka, Ichiro Suzuki and Hiroyuki Nakajima as Japan went ahead 2-1. In the 8th, he gave up a one-out hit to Seiichi Uchikawa and was relieved by Hyun-jin Ryu, who let the inherited run score. South Korea rallied to tie it in the 9th but lost it in the 10th.

Through 2008, Jong is 23-23 with a 4.06 ERA in the KBO.
