Biographical Information[edit]

Hsien-Chang Chen was a 2-time All-Star in the CPBL. He earned the nickname "Dragon Slayer" for his dominant performance against the Wei Chuan Dragons.

Weng represented Taiwan in the 1988 Haarlemse Honkbalweek. The Brother Elephants signed Chen in 1990 when the league was founded, and he was 0-1 with a 8.53 ERA in 1990. Chen struggled again in 1991, and he recorded a 5.72 ERA in 7 games. When pitching coach Toshihide Yamane joined the team in 1992, he gave Chen some advice, and he finally broke out. Chen was 8-5 with a 2.36 ERA in 1992, ranking 2nd in ERA (.41 behind Julio Solano) and 6th in wins (8 behind Yi-Hsin Chen).

The Yunlin native's ERA rose to 4.65 in 1993, but he still collected a career-high 12 wins. He was 6th in wins, 6 behind Jose Nunez. Chen started in 1993 Taiwan Series Game 4, and he outdueled Nunez with 5 shutout innings. The Brothers beat the Uni-President Lions in 6 games. Chen was 10-3 with a 3.88 ERA in 1994, and he ranked 8th in wins (12 behind Yi-Hsin Chen). He was selected into the 1995 CPBL All-Star Game, but he allowed 2 runs in 2 innings and got the loss. He ended up 6-7 with a 2.87 ERA in 1995, and he ranked 7th in ERA (.98 behind Nunez).

Chen slumped to 6-8 with a 5.06 ERA in 1996, but he bounced back soon in 1997. He was 9-2 with a 2.23 ERA in 1997, and he ranked 2nd in ERA (.33 behind Mike Garcia). Chen was also selected into the 1997 CPBL All-Star Game, and he pitched 2 shutout innings to get the win. After having a 4.21 ERA in 16 appearances in 1998, Chen announced his retirement and became a coach. He was the pitching coach for the Elephants in 2007.

Chen was a submariner, and his repertoire included a fastball, slider, changeup, curveball and sinker.

Overall, Chen was 52-38 with a 3.71 ERA, struck out 321 and pitched 800 2/3 innings in 9 seasons in the CPBL. As of 2023, he ranked 24th in wins (between Hung-Wen Chen and Chun-Liang Wu).
