Biographical Information[edit]

Hidetoshi Hakamada caught in Nippon Pro Baseball for 13 years.

Hakamada was selected by the Lotte Orions in the first round of the 1977 NPB draft, and he primarily spent his first four seasons in the NPB Farm Leagues, only having 76 at-bats combined with the big club. He hit .208/.243/.266 as the starting catcher in 1982, and he improved to .231/.275/.363 in 1983. Hakamada was also selected into the 1982 NPB All-Star Game, and he was 0-for-1 with a walk for the Pacific League. Hakamada was qualified for the batting title in 1984, and he hit .259/.319/.369 with 5 homers. He was selected into the 1985 NPB All-Star Game, but he didn't get any at-bats (he appeared in Game 1 and 2 as backup catcher).

The Shizuoka native ended up hitting .242/.288/.346 with 8 homers in 1985, then he had a .244/.295/.388 batting line with a career-high 9 homers and a league leading 34 sacrifice bunts in 1986.His batting line was .212/.276/.269 in 1987, and he also led the league in CS% with 0.43. Hakamada recorded a .250/.286/.329 batting line in 1988, but he then lost his starting spot after Yoichi Fukuzawa joined the team in 1989. He only played 58 games with a .159/.237/.206 batting line in 1989, then he announced his retirement in 1990. Hakamada then coached the Lotte from 1990 to 1997 and from 2000 to 2012. He was also the bench coach for the Seibu Lions from 2014 to 2015.

Overall, Hakamada hit .231/.281/.328 with 519 hits and 38 homers in 13 seasons in NPB.
