Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and the 24th President of the United States. The first man to serve two non-consecutive terms, he was first elected in 1884, defeated by Benjamin Harrison in 1888, and reelected in 1892.
Cleveland followed baseball and became acquainted with Hall of Fame pitcher Pud Galvin while serving as mayor of Buffalo, NY. During his first term as President, he invited Cap Anson and the National League champion Chicago White Stockings to the White House in 1885. During his second term, future National League president John Heydler visited the White House and recited the poem "Casey at the Bat" for Cleveland.
Despite his interest in baseball, Cleveland never attended a baseball game while President because of his sense of duty to his job.
Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander was named after President Cleveland. Other players named after him: Grover Baichley, Grover Land and Grover Lowdermilk.
