Biographical Information

Greg Belson was a minor league pitcher for five seasons after being a Division III All-American.

Belson was 10-1 with a 2.43 ERA in 2000, to win NCAA Division III All-American honors. His school, Montclair State, won the 2000 Division III College World Series. The Arizona Diamondbacks picked him in the 26th round of the 2000 amateur draft. He made his pro debut that summer, spending time with both the Missoula Osprey (1-0, Sv, 2 R in 5 IP) and High Desert Mavericks (2-0, 8 Sv, 2.49). With the 2001 South Bend Silver Hawks, he saved 16, was 6-4 and had a 2.50 ERA. He led Arizona minor leaguers in saves.

The wheels came off for Greg in 2002, as he had a 6.88 ERA (though a 5-4 record) for the Lancaster JetHawks. He missed 2003 to injury and was little better with Lancaster in 2004 (3-1, Sv, 6.34, 1.93 WHIP). The New York Mets signed him and sent him to the St. Lucie Mets, for whom he was 2-3 with a 5.09 ERA in 2005. It was his final season as a player, having gone 20-11 with 26 saves and a 4.86 ERA. He later was pitching coach for the College of Staten Island.
