He was signed by Arizona scouts Miguel Nava and Marlon Urdaneta in September 2007. He hit .249/.343/.315 as a utility infielder for the 2008 DSL Diamondbacks and was only 9-for-19 in steal attempts. In 2009, he fielded .979 at 2B for the Yakima Bears and batted .220/.278/.335. He split 2010 between the Visalia Oaks (.247/.317/.318 in 56 G) and Mobile BayBears (.255/.260/.515 in 20 G). After struggling the first four years of his career, he had a breakout campaign in 2012 by hitting .287/.347/.452 with 14 home runs, 73 RBI, 82 runs, 36 doubles and 10 stolen bases while fielding .972 at 2B in 127 games between the South Bend Silver Hawks (.293/.371/.449 in 67 G) and Visalia Rawhide (.282/.321/.456 in 60 G). He tied Ender Inciarte for 9th in the Diamondbacks chain in runs, tied Matt Helm for third in doubles, tied for 10th in home runs and tied Jake Elmore for 8th in RBI. He was 1 for 9 for the Bravos de Margarita in the 2012-2013 Venezuelan Winter League, his debut in his homeland.

He followed that up with a solid 2013, when he hit .282/.334/.446 with 19 home runs, 72 RBI and 90 runs scored in 134 games for the Rawhide. He was 7th in the California League in runs (between Kevin Rivers and Travis Jankowski) and tied Chris Lofton for second in sacrifice hits (14). Alex Yarbrough was named the All-Star second baseman. With the Bravos that winter, he split second base with Cesar Hernandez and Alberto Gonzalez but hit only .208/.288/.302 in 25 games, fielding .956 at second.
