Biographical Information[edit]

German Gulbit pitched for the USSR national team and Russian national team.

Gulbit was a javelin thrower before being recruited by the Soviets to pitch. [1] In the 1990 Goodwill Games, he was on the Soviet staff. [2] In the 1991 Intercontinental Cup, the 36-year-old was probably the oldest player on their team, a year and a half ahead of Leonid Korneev (one player, Valentin Mishkur, had no birthdate listed, so could conceivably have been older). He was their first reliever in an Intercontinental Cup, replacing Renat Makhnuito in the 7th inning of their opening loss to Spain and allowing two runs in two innings, including a Félix Cano dinger. He allowed one run in two against both Nicaragua and Mexico then retired Arnaud Fau to close out Korneev's 11-5 win over France, the only Soviet win. He led the team in appearances and his 5.68 ERA led the staff, .25 ahead of Makhnuito. [3]

In the 1993 European Championship, he was 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA for Russia; only Stepan Rubanov was higher for them. He lost to Roderick Hopkins and Sweden. [4]
