Biographical Information[edit]
Gerard Lipscomb, who was sometimes given the derogatory nickname "Nig", hit pretty well for the St. Louis Browns under managers Rogers Hornsby and Jim Bottomley in 1937, posting a batting line of .323/.398/.438. He was used mostly at second base, but also got into three games as a pitcher, pitching 9 2/3 innings.
Lipscomb also played 13 seasons in the minors, from 1933to 1941 and 1944 to 1947. The Baseball in Wartime site does not, however, show him as serving in the military in 1942 and 1943. He managed in the minors in 1940 and 1946-1947.
He was born in Rutherfordton, NC, the first of four major leaguers through 2019 to have been born there. He was born in North Carolina two days after Bill Baker was born in the state.
