Frederiksted
Frederiksted is a town on the west end of the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix. It has a population of around 800, and that of the larger sub-district is around 3,800. Nonetheless, this quiet little place has had a surprisingly large impact on major-league baseball.
In addition to the players born here, Midre Cummings grew up just outside the town and Julio Navarro, born in Puerto Rico, grew up here. Christopher, Plaskett, and Navarro all played together for a local team called the Annaly Athletics. In 1954, the cream of the Annaly squad joined another team called the Christiansted Commandos to represent the Virgin Islands in the National Baseball Congress tournament. There, Howie Haak signed Joe Christopher, and he made the Virgin Islands part of his scouting itinerary in Latin America after that. It was a pivotal moment in V.I. baseball history.
