Biographical Information[edit]
Second baseman Steve Walker was a Boston Red Sox farmhand from 1981 through 1984. After playing for Elmira in the NY-Penn League in 1981, he then spent three straight seasons with Winter Haven (Class A). He could not rise above that level, though; his lifetime batting average was just .230 with one homer and a slugging percentage of .275. Walker did have some ability to draw walks, and one local observer added that he had good hands, could run like a rabbit, and was a heady player. The Frederiksted product went awry, though, by trying to remake himself as a switch-hitter in the mold of his role model, Horace Clarke.
Walker also saw some action in Puerto Rican winter ball with the Ponce Leones. It's most likely that this opportunity came courtesy of the other man who helped develop him as a player, Elmo Plaskett.
