Biographical Information[edit]

Federico Baez pitched as high as AAA.

Baez was undrafted out of college and signed with the Baltimore Orioles in July 2001. He debuted as a middle infielder for the GCL Orioles, hitting .259/.368/.297 in 28 games. Baltimore released him after one season and he signed with the Chicago Cubs. Converted to pitching, Federico did very well for the AZL Cubs (9 Sv, 1.95) and Boise Hawks (0 R in 2 IP). He was second to Daniel Arias in the Arizona League in saves.

In 2003, the right-hander had a 4-3, 3.38 record with one save while making 52 appearances for the Lansing Lugnuts. Baez won 8 while losing two and saving one in 48 games for the 2004 Daytona Cubs, posting a 3.55 ERA in 48 games. During the 2005 campaign, the Bayamon native spent time with Daytona (3.86 ERA, 14 K in 9 1/3 IP), West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (4-3, 4.58 in 41 G) and Iowa Cubs (8.31 ERA in 4 G).

Baez pitched for Puerto Rico in the 2006 World Baseball Classic and did well, allowing one hit and no runs in 2 2/3 IP. He split 2006 between West Tenn (2-2, 7 Sv, 2.43 in 25 G) and Iowa (0-3, 5.06 in 9 G). Baez was one of Puerto Rico's stars in the 2006 Americas qualifier for the 2008 Olympics, allowing 2 runs and striking out 11 in 11 innings (the most on the club). Federico struggled with Iowa in 2007 (2-0, 8.84, 30 H, 12 BB in 18 1/3 IP)) and was let go by Chicago.

Baez began 2008 with the Saraperos de Saltillo, allowing a whopping 27 hits and 24 runs in only 10 innings and going 0-2 to earn a quick release. He then signed with the Camden Riversharks. With Camden, he went 2-4 with 9 saves and a 6.06 ERA in 19 appearances.

In the winter of 2008-2009, Baez pitched for the Santurce Crabbers, going 2-1 with a save and a 4.23 ERA. He was a surprising pick for a spot on Puerto Rico's provisional roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic given his performance in 2007-2008.

In 2009, he pitched in the Cincinnati Reds systems, going 6-3 with a 3.88 ERA in 43 appearances between the Carolina Mudcats and Triple-A Louisville Bats. With the Gigantes de Carolina that winter, he was 1-0 with a 4.66 ERA in 18 appearances (two starts). In 2010, he returned to the Reds system, going 1-2 with a 3.04 ERA in 38 games between the Mudcats and Bats. He wrapped up his career in 2011 by going 6-5 with a 5.58 ERA in 18 games (15 starts) for Camden.

Overall, Baez went 35-28 with a 4.40 ERA in 338 games (33 starts) over 10 pro seasons.
