Biographical Information[edit]

Fabián Pertuz has played in the minors and been on the Colombian national team.

He was signed by Chicago Cubs scouts Manny Esquivia, Louie Eljaua and Hector Ortega in August 2017. [1] He had a fine pro debut with the 2018 DSL Cubs 1, hitting .298/.420/.427 with 38 walks, 49 runs and 6 triples in 62 games, stealing 36 bases in 46 tries. He fielded .939 at short. He tied for 6th in the Dominican Summer League in swipes. Despite playing in a short-season league, he was among Cubs minor league leaders in triples (tied Jared Young and Roberto Caro for first) and swipes (tied Caro for 4th).

Coming stateside, he hit .325/.359/.437 between the 2019 AZL Cubs 1 and AZL Cubs 2, scoring 33 times in 49 games but seeing his walk (9), triple (1) and steal (9) rates drop. The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, he hit .223/.287/.308 with only three steals and no triples for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, now being used as a utility infielder. He was 1 for 15 with a walk and two runs, fielding .923, when Colombia finished third in the 2021 U-23 Baseball World Cup. [2] improved in '22, batting .237/.285/.370 with 13 steals and 27 doubles for the South Bend Cubs, playing primarily second and short. He tied Luis Verdugo for 6th in the Cubs system in doubles and tied Verdugo for third in the Midwest League (behind only L.J. Jones and Eddys Leonard).

That winter, he produced at a .257/.347/.395 clip for his hometown Caimanes de Barranquilla, scoring 33 times in 42 games and going 12-for-13 in steals. He was second in the Colombian League in steals (three behind Derwin Pomare) and ninth in runs. He reinforced the Vaqueros de Montería for the 2023 Caribbean Series. He hit a 13th-inning homer off the WildCats' Cerilio Soleana and finished at .242/.286/.394, splitting 3B with Francisco Acuña and SS with Dayan Frías. [3] He then made Colombia's roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic. [4]
