Biographical Information[edit]
OF/1B Jared Young was the first person born in the city of Prince George in northern British Columbia to reach the majors. He did grow up in the somewhat more southerly Kelowna, BC, however. He was a 15th round selection by the Chicago Cubs in the 2017 amateur draft out of Old Dominion University, completely on the other side of the continent, where he was a second baseman. In the meantime, he had also attended two other schools before making his way to Virginia. The Cubs developed him as a utility player, having him play the outfield, first base, second base and third base in the minor leagues.
He made his major league debut on September 16, 2022, starting at first base for the Cubs against the Colorado Rockies and went 1 for 4 in a 2-1 win. His first major league hit was a two-out double off Justin Lawrence in the 8th. Eight family members made the long trip from Prince George to see him play at Wrigley Field.
He played for the Canadian national team at the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
