Biographical Information

Ernesto Pino has pitched for the Spanish national team.

The Cuba native was 0-2 with two saves and a 5.06 ERA in 2019 in college, 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA in a COVID-19-shortened 2020 and 7-1, 3.78 in 2021 with 78 K in 66 2/3 IP. He tied for 6th in The Sun Conference in wins and was 4th in strikeouts. He pitched briefly for the Marlins Puerto Cruz in the Spanish Baseball League that summer (2-0, 0.96 in 4 G). He then pitched for Spain in the 2021 European Championship. He debuted against Croatia, relieving fellow Cuban Orlando Rodriguez in the 4th with a 8-0 lead and a no-hitter in progress. He went 1-2-3 against Philip Smith, Andrew Jones and Ronnie Krsolovic. After Spain made it 12-0 in the bottom of the 4th, he retired Antonio Horvatić, Slobodan Gales and Benjamin Paulić (the last one by strikeout). Jorge Balboa took over in the 6th, then Rhiner Cruz closed out the no-hitter. His other outing was much rougher. In the semifinals, against the champion Dutch national team, he replaced another Cuban, Carlos Sierra, in the 3rd with one out, no one on and a 4-3 deficit. He allowed a single to Dwayne Kemp, who was out trying to make it a double, but Junior Martina singled and John Polonius doubled to make it 5-3. Calten Daal grounded out to end the inning. In the 4th, he walked Jiandido Tromp and Roger Bernadina singled; Fernando Baez relieved and both runners scored, giving Pino 3 runs in 2/3 IP. His 10.13 ERA was Spain's highest in the Euros that year; Ricardo Hernández was next at 9.
