The El Paso Dodgers were members of the Texas League for one year, 1972. Managed by Monty Basgall and then Stan Wasiak, the Dodgers won the western division with a 78-62 record then swept the Alexandria Aces 3 games to 0 in the championship. El Paso had led the league with 647 runs scored and drew 108,158 fans, 4th in the TL. For a team that won so often, it is surprising that they had no All-Stars. P Rick Rhoden (6-4, 3.31, hit .286), 2B Lee Lacy (.371/~.421/.500 in 68 games) and 3B Jerry Royster (.257/~.324/.441, a team-high 18 HR, 25 SB) went on to the best major league careers. Dennis James (11-3, 1.84) fanned 167 in 137 innings while allowing 97 hits and finished 3 innings short of winning the ERA title. OF Wayne Burney (.315/~.392/.418) was second in the league in average while 1B Terry McDermott (.343/~.417/.551 in 81 games), like Lacy, did not play enough to qualify. In 1973 the team became a California Angels affiliate and returned to the traditional name for teams from El Paso, TX, the El Paso Sun Kings.
