Biographical Information

Edsel Martis was a star in Dutch baseball in the mid-1990s. He made his debut in the Hoofdklasse with the Amsterdam Pirates in 1982. He led the Hoofdklasse with 47 RBI in 1993, while playing for the Hoofddorp Pioniers. That year, he made his Dutch national team debut in the 1993 European Championship; being used mainly at DH, he hit .240/.375/.520 with 7 RBI in nine games for the champs. He tied Massimo Fochi, Oswald Boermans and Arnaud Fau for second in the event in homers, one behind Marcel Joost. He hit .286/.318/.476 for the Netherlands in the 1994 Baseball World Cup, serving as their primary DH.

In the 1995 European Championship, Edsel batted .435/.622/.957 with 17 RBI and 13 runs in 9 games to help his team win Gold. He was named the tourney's All-Star DH. He was 4th in the event in OBP (behind Enrico Vecchi, Eric de Bruin and Evgeny Puchkov), 4th in slugging (behind Sylvain Hervieux, Fau and David Meurant), 5th in home runs (3), tied for 4th in runs (behind Johnny Balentina, Eddy Dix and Fau), tied for the most RBI (with Fau and Luigi Carrozza), tied for 7th in total bases (22) and 4th in walks (10).

Edsel batted .353/.353/.706 in the 1995 Intercontinental Cup, again as the Dutch team DH. He tied Marcel Joost for the team lead with two homers and was second to Jeffrey Cranston for slugging for the Netherlands. He remained with the Netherlands for the 1996 Olympics, in which he was 4 for 13 with two homers as the primary Dutch DH. He hit one homer off the USA's R.A. Dickey in a 17-1 loss and the other came in a loss to Japan, the Silver Medal winners.

After retiring at the end of 1996, Martis tried a comeback ten years later, but went just 1 for 7 for the Amsterdam Pirates.
