Biographical Information

Pitcher Denny Galehouse of the St. Louis Browns started the first game of the 1944 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals and earned a complete game win. The next year, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from April to October 1945. He infamously started the one-game playoff between the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians on October 4, 1948, ahead of more prestigious pitchers (he had only gone 8-7 with an ERA of 3.92 up to that point); he gave up four runs in three innings, the Red Sox lost the game, 8-3, and a possible "all-Boston" World Series was prevented.

After retiring in 1950, he became a scout. Among the players he discovered and signed include Andy Benes, Frank Baumann, Joey Cora, Ken McBride, Lloyd McClendon, Matt Mieske and A.J. Sager. Galehouse died of heart disease at age 86.
