Biographical Information[edit]

Former big league pitcher A.J. Sager was pitching coach for the West Michigan Whitecaps from 2002 to 2006 and the Erie Sea Wolves in 2007. In 2008-2013 he moved up to the Toledo Mud Hens. Sager was the Detroit Tigers' minor league pitching coordinator from 2014-2021. In 2018 he was called up to the majors to take over temporarily for bullpen coach Rick Anderson, who was himself filling in for pitching coach Chris Bosio who had to take a leave of absence in mid-April because of a medical issue. He took over the job on a full-time basis when Bosio was fired at the end of June for making insensitive remarks and stayed until the end of the season.

Sager moved to the New York Mets' organization as pitching coach of the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2022 and Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2023-2024.
