Dawei Zhu was the first Chinese native to be drafted by a Nippon Pro Baseball team, though Jiangang Lu had been the first player from China signed by a NPB team.

Zhu was chosen by the Seibu Lions in the 3rd round of the 2007 draft. He did not make it to the Lions in 2007 or 2008, instead playing in the minors. He was on China's roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic. He made his only appearance against South Korea, relieving Tao Bu in the 5th with a 6-0 deficit, two on and none out. He plunked Bum-ho Lee then walked Kyung-wan Park to force in a run. Ki-hyuk Park hit into a run-scoring error by Guangbiao Liu. Jong-wook Lee delivered a sacrifice fly. Keun-woo Jeong singled, but Kyung-wan Park was thrown out at home on the play. Zhu then got Hyun-soo Kim to end the inning. Kai Liu replaced him to open the 6th.

Zhu never got into a game in NPB, being released at the end of 2011 and returning to China to play for the Shanghai Golden Eagles.
