Biographical Information[edit]

Dave Campbell pitched in the majors for the Atlanta Braves in 1977 and 1978. Dave led the Braves in pitching appearances in his last major league season, making a total of 118 appearances with 14 saves and a 4-10, 3.82 record over the two years. Campbell's hitting as a pitcher was not good: he finished just 1 for 12 batting in the big leagues. In fact he was the only person teammate Phil Niekro, a future Hall of Famer, ever pinch-hit for in Niekro's 24 years in the majors. On August 23, 1978. Niekro (career average .169) batted for Campbell in a Braves extra-inning loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, striking out.

Campbell was traded to the Montreal Expos in return for infielder Pepe Frias prior to the 1979 season but could not find a slot on the Expos' pitching staff, as the team was extremely strong on the mound. He spent 1979-1981 on the Expos' AAA affiliate, the Denver Bears, before retiring.

With the Braves, Campbell was a year younger than teammates Jeff Burroughs and Gary Matthews.

Campbell was born in Princeton, IN, the birthplace of Gil Hodges. He is not to be confused with the other Dave Campbell, an infielder who spent most of his career in the NL in the 1970s.
