Biographical Information

Dan Shulman is a broadcaster who served as the play-by-play announcer for Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN.

He began working as a radio broadcaster for the sports team of his alma mater, the University of Western Ontario, in London, ON and for the London Knights, the city's junior hockey team. He then moved to Toronto, ON to work at an all-sports radio station and earned his first prominent assignment as a hockey commentator for CTV at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. In 1995, he got his first baseball experience as the play-by-play announcer on Toronto Blue Jays telecasts on The Sports Network (TSN), alongside former player Buck Martinez. He stayed on the job for seven years, also working NHL and NBA games for TSN during the winter.

He began working part-time for ESPN in 1995, while still employed by TSN, then moved there full time in 2001. His major assignments were college basketball and the NBA, although he would also cover the occasional baseball game on television. He did work as the main radio baseball announcer for the network from 2002 to 2007, teaming with Dave Campbell. From 2008 to 2010, he teamed up with Orel Hershiser on ESPN's Monday Night Baseball telecasts.

In 2011, he, Hershiser and Bobby Valentine were named to replace the long-time tandem of Jon Miller and Joe Morgan as the announcers on ESPN's national Sunday Night Baseball telecasts, one of the highest-profile gigs in baseball broadcasting. He also worked with Terry Francona, John Kruk and Curt Schilling in later years. In 2016, his broadcast partners became Jessica Mendoza and Aaron Boone, making it the first time a woman had worked such a prominent regular assignment in baseball. During this time, while FOX Sports held the rights for the television broadcasts of the World Series, Shulman broadcast the games on radio for ESPN, as well as other postseason series.

In addition to his work for ESPN, Shulman returned to broadcasting some Toronto Blue Jays games on Rogers Sportsnet starting in 2016, joining his old partner Martinez and Pat Tabler. That ended his long-time association with TSN (he was still doing work for its all-sports radio station) in favor of its bitter rival. In July of 2017, he announced he would be leaving Sunday Night Baseball at the end of that season. He explained that he wanted to spend more time in his hometown of Toronto, something which the weekly national assignment made difficult. He was replaced by Matt Vasgersian as the show's play-by-play broadcaster.

In 2020, he was named the winner of the Jack Graney Award, given by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in recognition of excellence in presenting baseball in Canadian media.

His son Ben Shulman is also a broadcaster. He has done play-by-play for the Blue Jays on the radio and has also filled in for his father in the television booth.
