Biographical Information[edit]
Cole Sturgeon played in the minor leagues from 2014 until 2022. He spent parts of four seasons in AAA but never made the majors; the outfielder hit .263/.319/.376 in 720 games.
He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 10th round of the 2014 amateur draft out of the University of Louisville, where he had hit over .300 in three of his four seasons and had played in both the 2013 College World Series and 2014 College World Series. He played in the Red Sox system until 2019, reaching AAA in 2016. He was a high-average hitter with limited power, only reaching double figures in home runs once during that span, when he hit 10 with the Pawtucket Red Sox in 2019. Still, he seemed on his way to securing at least a cup of coffee in the majors.
However, he was one of a large number of minor league players whose careers were upended by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, he was unable to play in the affiliated minor leagues, as they were shut down, and was one of the group of professional players who headed to the Houston, TX area to play in the independent Constellation Energy League that summer; he appeared in 20 games for the Sugar Land Skeeters. The Red Sox then let him go and he spent 2021 in two indy leagues, hitting .321 in 61 games for the Lexington Legends of the Atlantic League and .256 in 32 games for the Milwaukee Milkmen of the American Association. Already 30 at that point, he still managed to be signed by the Minnesota Twins, albeit only for organizational depth. He split the 2022 season between the AA Wichita Wind Surge and AAA St. Paul Saints, hitting .248 in 155 games, with 9 homers and 71 RBIs, then called it a career.
