Biographical Information[edit]

Claudio Matumoto was a pitcher on the Brazilian national team in the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers but did not get into a game. In the 2016 South American Championship, he pitched three times. Against Argentina, he relieved AAA veteran Murilo Gouvea in the 7th with a 8-1 lead and threw two shutout innings (2 H, 2 K) before Jean Tome finished it off. Matumoto got the start against Peru and threw four shutout frames, allowing one hit and two walks while fanning two before Ricardo Kirihara relieved; Claudio got the win. In the finale, he allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks in 1 1/3 IP late in a 10-4 win over Argentina as Brazil got the Gold. His .143 opponent average in the round-robin phase was 8th in the tourney, between Ezequiel Cufre and Leandro Juárez.
