Biographical Information[edit]

Chung-Kuang Lai played in the CPBL for 11 years.

Lai represented Taiwan in the 1981 World Junior Championship, and the Uni-President Lions signed him in 1990. Since they already had legendary catcher Chi-Chen Tseng, Lai was a backup catcher in his entire career. He hit .227/.270/.269 in his rookie year, then he only played 28 games in 1991. Lai bounced back in 1992, and he hit .272/.294/.307 in 58 games. He only had 64 at-bats in 1993, and he was 0-for-1 in the 1993 Taiwan Series as the Lions were beaten by the Brother Elephants in 6 games. Lai played 60 games combined in the next two seasons, then he announced his retirement after the 1995 season.

However, the Lions couldn't find a reliable backup catcher, so they persuaded Lai to come back in 1997. Lai hit .125/.143/.167 in 1997, then he had 103 at-bats with a .175/.216/.233 batting line in 1998. He had his career year in 1999, hitting .280/.323/.314 in 53 games with a career-high 33 hits. He also attended the 1999 CPBL All-Star Game, and he was 0-for-2. Lai hit .292/.352/.323 in 2000, and he was 4-for-14 in the 2000 Taiwan Series but the Lions lost to the Elephants in 7 games again. The veteran catcher slumped to .198/.260/.233 in 2001, then he announced his retirement. He was the battery coach for the Lions from 2002 to 2003.

Overall, Lai hit .225/.278/.265 with 193 hits and 32 doubles in 11 seasons in the CPBL.
