Biographical Information

Pitcher Chris Ellis was drafted twice, first by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 50th round in 2011 and again by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 3rd round of the 2014 amateur draft after attending the University of Mississippi. The scout was J.T. Zink.

He made his professional debut in 2014, with 9 games, including 2 starts, with the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer League, going 0-1, 7.04. In 2015, he began the year with Inland Empire 66ers of the California League, then was promoted to the Arkansas Travelers of the Texas League in mid-June. Between the two stops, he went 11-9, 3.90 in 26 starts. He logged 140 2/3 innings, during which he allowed 130 hits and 63 walks while striking out 132 opponents. On November 12th, he was traded to the Atlanta Braves, along with SS Erick Aybar, fellow pitching prospect Sean Newcomb and $3.2 million in return for SS Andrelton Simmons and minor league catcher Jose Briceno. he split the 2016 season between the AA Mississippi Braves and the AAA Gwinnett Braves. He did very well in the Southern League, with a record of 8-2, 2.75, but found the going tougher in the International League, where he was only 4-7, 6.52. Overall, his record was 12-9, 4.49 in 28 games - all starts. In 146 1/3 innings, he struck out 126 but walked 87. On December 1st, he was included in another big trade, joining fellow prospects Luke Dykstra and John Gant in heading to the St. Louis Cardinals in return for veteran major league starter Jaime Garcia.
