Biographical Information[edit]

Chih-Hong Chen played in the Chinese Professional Baseball League for 10 years.

Chen played in the 2005 Asian Championship and 2005 Baseball World Cup. In the latter event, he was 2 for 6 with a triple. At catcher, he threw out the only player who tried to steal but also made one error while backing up Yi-Wei Lee. Chen made his pro debut in the 2006 CPBL with the Brother Elephants, going 8 for 65 with a double, triple and five walks. He hit .243/.287/.335 in 2007. On August 1 of that year, he hit his first home run, off Pat Ahearne. In 2008, the 29-year-old dazzled in limited time, going 21 for 53 with 4 doubles and 7 walks. He also pitched in three games, allowing three runs in three innings. He peaked at 88.8 mph on the radar gun and also threw a slider, cutter and sinker. Chen hit .396/.467/.472 in 21 games in 2009, and he was 1-for-8 in the 2009 Taiwan Series. The Brothers were beaten by the Uni-President Lions in 7 games.

Starting at catcher for the 2010 Elephants, Chen struggled at .215/.260/.344 while fielding .979. In 2011, his offensive numbers were relatively stable - .215/.292/.270 - but his fielding percentage improved to .994. He won his first CPBL Gold Glove that year. Chen improved to .229/.291/.277 in 2012, and he won the Gold Glove again. He was also selected into the 2012 CPBL All-Star Game, and he was 1-for-2. Chen slumped to .196/.254/.262 in 2013, and he had a .216/.245/.324 batting line in 2014. He only played 19 games in 2015, and he had a 0-for-3 record in the 2015 Taiwan Series. Chen announced his retirement after the series, and he became a coach for the Brothers in 2019.

Overall, Chen hit .223/.278/.300 with 295 hits and 56 doubles in 10 seasons in CPBL.
