Biographical Information[edit]

The brother of major leaguer John Hofford, Chick Hofford was primarily a catcher in the minors. He played for Lancaster in 1884, then hit .239/?/.261 between the Richmond Virginians and Lancaster Ironsides/Baltimore Monumentals in 1885. In 1886, he hit .237/?/.270 for the Utica Pentups. He split 1887 between Utica and the Jersey City Skeeters. He remained with Jersey City for 1888.

In 1889, Hofford played for Jersey City and both the Syracuse Stars and Rochester Jingoes (a combined .277 in 16 games for Syracuse and Rochester; one of Syracuse's other backstops was the notable pioneer Fleet Walker). In 1890, Hofford hit .196/?/.217 in 97 games for the New Haven club. He split 1891 between New Haven (7 for 33, 3 2B, 3B) and the Grand Rapids Shamrocks to end his minor league career.
