Biographical Information[edit]
John Hofford is the brother of minor leaguer Chick Hofford. After his playing career ended, John was a minor league umpire.
John was with the Augusta Browns for most of 1885, going 38-13 and posting a sterling ERA of 0.59, although he allowed 152 unearned runs. He came to the majors in September with the Pittsburgh Alleghenys of the American Association, and although he lost all three of his appearances, he came back with the same team for nine more games in 1886. Thereafter he was in the minors for several more seasons.
The SABR biography of Frank Ringo states that he and Hofford were released by the 1886 Alleghenys for "lushing".
