Biographical Information[edit]
Chen-Yen Chiang has pitched in the CPBL.
Chiang represented Taiwan in the 2013 U-18 Baseball World Cup. He threw two shutout innings against Japan, then went five scoreless to beat Venezuela but allowed two runs in zero innings in a loss to the USA's Joe DeMers then allowed 3 runs (2 earned) in 2/3 of an inning in losing to Cuba and Vladimir Gutiérrez in the Bronze Medal Game. He tied for the event lead in losses. [1] The Uni-President Lions drafted him in the first round of the 2013 CPBL Draft.[2] Chiang spent his rookie season in the minor league, and he had a 3.99 ERA in 13 games. He only pitched 4 games with the big club in 2014. Chiang joined the rotation in 2015, and he was 6-3 with a 4.07 ERA in 27 games. He was selected into the 2015 CPBL All-Star Game, and he pitched a shutout inning.
The Taichung native slumped to 2-8 with a 7.24 ERA in 2016, and he was 0-4 with a 6.11 ERA in 2017. Chiang bounced back and he attended the 2018 CPBL All-Star Game; he pitched a shutout inning. In the 2018 Taiwan Series, Chiang started in Game 3 but he allowed 3 runs in one inning, and Cheng-Feng Chiang relieved him. The Lamigo Monkeys beat the Lions in 6 games. Chiang struggled in 2019, and he had a 4-8 with a 5.40 ERA. He was still named the starter of 2019 CPBL All-Star Game 2, and he pitched 3 innings with a run allowed.[3]
Chiang's ERA rose to 7.07 in 2020, and he became the first pitcher to allow 5 homers in a game in the CPBL, doing so on June 25. He started in 2020 Taiwan Series Game 4 against the CTBC Brothers, but he allowed 5 runs in 4 2/3 innings and got the loss. The Lions beat the Brothers in 7 games, and Chiang won his first Taiwan Series title. He came back in 2021 and he was 4-5 with a 3.44 ERA in 17 games. He pitched 4 2/3 innings in 2021 Taiwan Series Game 3 against the Brothers, and he got the loss. The Elephants swept the Lions this time. Chiang was 2-7 with a 3.86 ERA in 2022. Since the Lions had solid local starters like Rui-Yang Gu Lin and Chih-Wei Hu in 2023, Chiang didn't have many chances, and he only pitched 4 games with a 2.08 ERA. The Lions then traded him to the TSG Hawks for Chun-Lin Kuo.
On April 3, 2024, the Hawks named Chiang the starter of their first game in the CPBL. He met the CTBC Brothers in Taipei Dome, and he pitched 6 innings with a unearned run. Chiang got the win thanks to Po-Jung Wang's clutch RBI single in the 7th inning.
Chiang's repertoire features a fastball that peaks at 91.9 mph, a changeup and curveball.
