Category talk:Hockey Players
Umpire Bill Stewart also refereed in the NHL and MLB/NFLer Hinkey Haines had something to do with hockey, but I can't dig out what at the moment.

I'm going to move this category to "hockey players". While there have been only a handful of NHL players who have played professional baseball, there is a lot more cross-over between professional baseball and hockey, and it's a shame that there is no category to recognize that. --Philippe (talk) 05:34, 19 October 2013 (EDT)
Does junior hockey count as professional...ex. Nyjer Morgan, Evan Rutckyj and Marcus Knecht. Also, players who played in other countries like Martin Helmig? Also, should this be professional hockey players to distinguish from Category: College Hockey? - --Mischa (talk) 13:03, 20 October 2013 (EDT)
Yes for junior hockey (it's professional by all common measure) and yes for professional leagues in Europe. If a player is listed at the IHDB, he's in this category. Old-time college hockey was quite amateurish, however, and I know we have a college football and college basketball category. --Philippe (talk) 13:20, 20 October 2013 (EDT)
We tend not to list people in both College Football and NFL players (or also College Basketball and NBA players), so we should probably not list both College Hockey and Hockey Players in both categories, right? - --Mischa (talk) 13:21, 20 October 2013 (EDT)
Peter Schöön played hockey but isn't in the database; does this mean he only played in the Swedish minors? - --Mischa (talk) 11:48, 1 November 2013 (EDT)
Interesting that 3 of the 17 guys we have listed are black: Morgan, McIntyre and Marshall - given the stereotype of hockey as a "white" sport - --Mischa (talk) 12:32, 18 November 2013 (EST)
Until the 1970s, there was indeed a lot of prejudice against blacks making it to the NHL (even though Willie O'Ree played in the NHL briefly in the 1950s), so the good black hockey players tended to be stuck in the minors. As good athletes, they sought other sporting opportunities to make ends meet, including baseball. Blacks have played hockey for decades in Canada; it's just that they constituted a much smaller percentage of the population than in the US, as there was never a large number of African slaves in Canada. I think O'Ree played some baseball as well, but I would need to look it up. --Philippe (talk) 04:10, 19 November 2013 (EST)
Up to 25. - --Mischa (talk) 11:04, 7 August 2015 (EDT)
Eric Cerantola (2019 Canadian national team) was drafted in the 2016 Ontario Hockey League draft. Does he get the category? - Mischa (talk) 15:48, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
