Biographical Information[edit]
Carlos Willoughby played seven seasons in the minors, winning one MVP award.
Signed by the San Francisco Giants, Willoughby hit .291/.419/.337 in 2007 as an outfielder for the DSL Giants. In 2008, as a OF-2B, he remained steady at the plate (.284/.414/.345), stole 33 bases in 37 tries (a big jump from 12 in 2007) and scored 60 runs in 55 games. He was second in the Dominican Summer League in runs (3 shy of Danny Taveras) and 4th in steals. Moving full-time to second base in 2009 (the position he would occupy for the rest of his pro career), he excelled for the DSL Giants - his batting line was .327/.466/.438, he again topped a run per game (74 in 68) and he stole even more bases (46 in 58 tries). He was 5th in average, led in runs by 13 over Yucay De La Cruz, tied for second in triples (10, two behind Kelvin Duran), led in walks (3 more than Geancarlo Mendez and Lewis Urena), was second in steals (one behind Randoll Santana) and led in OBP (.001 over Mendez). He was named DSL Player of the Year.
Coming stateside in 2010, Willoughby remained productive with the AZL Giants, hitting .295/.375/.432 with 23 steals in 27 tries and 34 runs in 45 games. He was second in the Arizona League in steals, 7 behind leader Darian Sandford, tied Nick Shaw for 6th in runs and tied for second with six triples (one behind Chevy Clarke). With the '11 Augusta Green Jackets, he slumped to .240/.341/.308 but still stole 33 bases in 43 tries, drew 63 walks and scored 80 times. He was 8th in the South Atlantic League in runs, was 5th in steals and missed the top 10 in walks (one behind Drew Maggi). Carlos hit .212/.325/.268 in 71 games for the 2012 Green Jackets. Let go by the Giants, he hit .200/.280/.234 for the 2013 Les Capitales de Québec to end his minor league career.
He was with the Colombian national team in the 2015 South American Championship, homering twice off Peru in the semifinals. Colombia won their first South American Championship. They advanced to the 2015 Pan American Games, where he batted .182/.250/.273 with two runs and no RBI in three games. He backed up Jonathan Lozada at 3B and played one game at 2B. He had two putouts and four assists.
