Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Brian McArn hit .354 at the University of Nebraska in 1990 with 34 steals in 62 games and .393 with 15 steals in 46 games in 1991. He was drafted in the 26th round of the 1991 amateur draft by the Oakland A's. In 1992 McArn hit only .225 with 3 steals in 24 games for the AZL A's. He returned for a second season in 1993, but an injury ended his playing career.
McArn began his coaching career as an assistant at American River College where he stayed from 1993-1997. In the summer of 1996 the head coach at American River (Kevin Higgins) was offered a summer managing job with the Vermont Expos and he took McArn along as his hitting coach.
In 1998 Oakland brought McArn back into their organization as a hitting coach. He coached the Modesto A's in 1998-2003, the Midland RockHounds in 2004, and the Sacramento River Cats in 2005-2010. McArn spent the next several years bouncing up and down between High-A and AA. He coached hitters for the Stockton Ports in 2011-2012, Midland in 2013, Stockton in 2014-2015, Midland in 2016-2017, and Stockton for a final time in 2018-2019. McArn was scheduled to return to Stockton in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. McArn was an assistant hitting coach for the Las Vegas Aviators in 2021 and hitting coach for the same team in 2022-2024. In 2023, he completed his 25th season overall in the Oakland Athletics organization.
McArn also has some international and offseason league coaching credits. He was the hitting coach for South Africa in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Still not worn out, McArn served as the Phoenix Desert Dogs hitting coach during the 2009 Arizona Fall League season. The next year, McArn was an assistant coach with Leones del Caracas during the 2010/2011 Venezuelan League season. He returned to Caracas to start the next year, but was let go on October 31, 2011 after the Leones' offense got off to a poor start. McArn's final international experience came in fall 2012 when he returned to South Africa as their hitting coach during the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers round.
