Biographical Information[edit]

Brad Hertzler was a minor league pitcher for five years. His brother Barry Hertzler pitched as high as AAA.

Hertzler was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the 32nd round of the 2004 amateur draft but did not sign. He went on to junior college then transferred to Maine in 2007, going 4-5 with a 3.58 ERA and walking only 17 in 73 IP. The Oakland A's took him in the 15th round of the 2007 amateur draft; the scout was Jeff Bittiger. In his third minor league start, he tossed a rain-shortened five-inning perfect game to beat the Spokane Indians, 1-0. It was the third perfect game in the minors that year, following Manny Parra and Guillermo Moscoso. It was not representative of his summer as he finished 3-6 with a 4.20 ERA and over a hit per inning for the Vancouver Canadians. He tied for 6th in the Northwest League in losses.

In 2008, Brad pitched for Vancouver (2-1, 3.60 in 7 G) and the Kane County Cougars (2-5, 5.26 in 26 G). He moved on to the independent leagues in 2009, going 2-4 with a 3.70 ERA in 35 games for the Brockton Rox. He tied Chris Anderson and Santiago Ramirez for 5th in the Canadian-American Association in pitching appearances. He went 3-1 with two saves and a 5.01 ERA in 36 games for Brockton, walking only 8 in 46 2/3 innings. He tied Shawn Gilblair for 8th in the Can-Am Association in games pitched. With the Melbourne Aces in the 2010-2011 Australian Baseball League, Hertzler was 0-1 with a 9.53 ERA and 19 hits in 10 1/3 IP. He ended his career with the 2011 Rox with a solid 0-3, 2.94 season.

Overall, Hertzler had gone 12-20 with two saves and a 4.31 ERA in 147 minor league games (17 starts), with 290 hits and 71 walks in 267 1/3 IP. He struck out 184.
