Biographical Information[edit]

Starting pitcher Boone Whiting began his professional career in the St. Louis Cardinals system in 2010. He reached Triple-A for the first time in 2013.

Whiting was 2-1 with 5 saves and a 1.53 ERA as a college freshman in 2008. He tied for third in the Summit League in saves and was named the All-Conference pitcher. He had a 6-2, 4.16 record with 86 K in 80 IP in 2009. He tied for 5th in the league in wins and was 4th in strikeouts. He improved to 6-2, 3.21 as a junior and fanned 120 in 84 IP to finish as his school's career strikeout leader. He was 6th in wins and easily led in strikeouts (36 ahead of Bryce Smolen). He was 15th in NCAA Division I in strikeouts, between Bryce Shafer and Noe Ramirez. He joined Blake Treinen and Smolen on the All-Conference team as the starting pitchers and won Pitcher of the Year. The St. Louis Cardinals took him in the 18th round of the that year's draft.

He began his career with the Johnson City Cardinals, going 5-3 with a 3.50 ERA in 13 games (9 starts), while striking out 68 batters and walking just five in 54 innings. He tied Jarret Martin for 5th in the Appalachian League in strikeouts and led Cardinals farmhands in K/BB ratio. He then won the playoff opener with one earned run and 7 whiffs in six innings. In 2011, he was 5-2 with a 2.41 ERA in 30 games (14 starts) for the Quad Cities River Bandits, striking out 122 batters to 22 walks in 119 innings. He led Cardinals farmhands in opponent average (.191) and WHIP and was second in K/BB ratio. He led the minors in WHIP (.89). Baseball America said he had the best control of a Cardinals farmhand.

Pitching for the GCL Cardinals, Quad City River Bandits and Springfield Cardinals in 2012, Whiting was a combined 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA in 9 games (6 starts) while missing most of the year with injury. In the Texas League playoffs, he held Tulsa to one hit in 7 innings in a game 5 win. In 2013, with Springfield (3-2, 2.93) and the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds (5-5, 4.09), Whiting was 8-7 with a 3.83 ERA in 27 starts. He had 133 K to 47 BB in 136 1/3 IP. He was second among Cardinals farmhands in whiffs, 15 behind Tim Cooney and tied for 6th in wins. With Memphis in 2014, he was 4-7 with a 4.19 ERA in 96 2/3 innings. He started 2015 with Memphis, but was released in late May. He signed with the Colorado Rockies and went 4-9 with a 6.44 ERA on the year as a whole. For 2016, he was signed by the Washington Nationals and began the year at Advanced A, with the Potomac Nationals. He also spent time with the Harrisburg Senators, going 11-6 with a 3.90 ERA in 23 games between the clubs. He played briefly for Aguilas del Zulia in the Venezuela Winter League in 2016-17.
