Biographical Information[edit]
Bobby Cuellar pitched in the minors from 1974 to 1981 with a cup of coffee in 1977 in the majors, when he posted an ERA of 1.35. He finished his career with one season in Mexico in 1982.
Cuellar was a pitching coach in the Seattle Mariners system from 1983 to 1994, except for 1986-1987 when he was the manager of the Wausau Timbers. He began as pitching coach for the Bakersfield Mariners in 1983, then moved up to AAA with the Salt Lake City Gulls in 1984 and the Calgary Cannons in 1985. After his time managing in Wausau he coached the San Bernardino Spirit (1988), Williamsport Bills (1989-1990), and Jacksonville Suns (1991). Cuellar was the Mariners minor league pitching instructor in 1992-1993 and returned to the Calgary Cannons in 1994. He served as pitching coach for the big league Mariners (1995-1996) and Montreal Expos (1997-2000) and as a bullpen coach for the Texas Rangers (2001).
Cuellar was the AAA pitching coach for the Minnesota Twins for four years with the Edmonton Trappers (2002) and Rochester Red Wings (2003-2005). After the 2005 season, he was named bullpen coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates, a post he occupied in 2006 and 2007 under manager Jim Tracy. He was then named manager of the New Britain Rock Cats for the 2008 season. Cuellar returned to Rochester as pitching coach in 2009-2012. In 2013, he was named bullpen coach of the Minnesota Twins and stayed on for the 2014 season before being dismissed along with the rest of long-time Twins manager Ron Gardenhire's coaching staff. Cuellar returned to the minors as pitching coach of the Ogden Raptors in 2015, Great Lakes Loons in 2016, Ogden again in 2017 and Great Lakes again in 2018. He was a coach for the ACL Dodgers in 2021-2022.
