In his first game for the Diamondblacks, he relieved Ben Cone with a 3-0 deficit in the 4th against host Australia and tossed 2 1/3 shutout innings, allowing no hits, though he did walk four. Jamie Wilson relieved. In his second outing, he replaced John Lee in the 3rd with a 2-0 deficit against South Africa, one on and no outs. He walked Jonathan Phillips, got Kyle Botha on a bunt, intentionally walked Brett Willemburg, induced a run-scoring grounder from Wesley Hoskins and gave up a RBI double to Rowan Ebersohn. Keegan Swanepoel added a two-run single for a 5-0 lead before Johnstone got Benjamin Smith to end the frame. Scott Cone relieved him in the 4th. His brother Elliot Johnstone later signed with the New York Mets.
