Biographical Information[edit]
Ben Cone was on the reserve list for the Sydney Blue Sox when he was picked for the New Zealand national team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers; his brother Scott Cone was picked as well. Ben pitched one game, relieving Scott in the opener with one on, two outs and a scoreless game in the 3rd against South Africa. He allowed hits to Kyle Botha and Brett Willemburg to make it 1-0, hit Rowan Ebersohn and then threw a wild pitch (Connar O'Gorman made an error on the play as well to make it 3-0) before fanning Brandon Bouillon. Blair Johnstone relieved in the 4th but the damage had been done as New Zealand lost; his brother took the loss as he was responsible for the inherited runner.
