Biographical Information[edit]
Bill Hallman's batting average increased every year over a nine-year period, from 1888 to 1896. This is a record: no one else's average did so over an eight-year span. The most recent player with seven was Carlos Guillen. William Wilson Hallman is the uncle of the other major leaguer named Bill Hallman, whose middle name was Harry.
Ironically, both Bill Hallmans played in the American Association's 1905 season opener, the elder (age 38) playing second base for the Indianapolis Indians hosting the Milwaukee Brewers who won the contest, 5-4, while the younger Hallman (age 29) played left field for the Louisville Colonels hosting the St. Paul Saints, the Colonels' ending up with a 10-3 win. The elder Hallman was 2-for-5 at the plate while the younger went hitless in four at-bats that day.
In addition to his major league managerial stint, he also managed the Denver Grizzlies in 1904, the Savannah Pathfinders for part of 1905, the Savannah Indians for part of 1906, and the Columbia Gamecocks for part of 1907. He also umpired a total of five games: three in the Players League in 1890 and two in the National League in 1903.
