Biographical Information[edit]
Austin Drury has pitched in the minors and for Team USA. He is the grandson of minor leaguer Roy Kelly and nephew of minor leaguer Ronald Kelly. [1]
He had a 1.83 ERA and hit .380 as a high school senior. [2] He was 6-1 with a 4.02 ERA as a college freshman and improved to 6-2, 3.03 as a sophomore. With the 2017 Hyannis Harbor Hawks in the Cape Cod League, he was 1-0, pitching five shutout innings. His junior season, he slipped to 4-4, 4.85. The Los Angeles Dodgers took him in the 34th round of the 2018 amateur draft, between Spencer Schwellenbach and Chavez Fernander.
Drury had a superb pro debut with the Ogden Raptors (1-0, Sv, 2.25 in 7 G) and Great Lakes Loons (3-1, Sv, 0.51 in 10 G). He split '19 between the Loons (1-1, 2 Sv, 2.39 in 15 G0 and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (1-2, Sv, 3.58 in 24 G), striking out 70 in 64 innings. The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. Returning to action in 2021, he pitched for Great Lakes (3-1, 3.00 in 11 G) and the Tulsa Drillers (3-1, 4.53 in 20 G). He was 4-1 with a save and a 4.34 ERA for the 2022 Drillers, but his WHIP was 2.09 and that ended his time in the Dodgers chain.
Moving to the independent leagues, he was 5-5 with a 3.79 ERA for the 2023 Sioux City Explorers, being used as a starter for the first time as a pro. He was 6th in the American Association with 98 strikeouts. That winter, he was 1-1 with a 4.71 ERA for the Tigres de Aragua of the Venezuelan League.
Bouncing around in 2024, he appeared for Sioux City (4-5, 5.10 in 16 G), the Bravos de León (1-4, 11.07 in 6 G) and Guerreros de Oaxaca (4 R, 3 ER in 2 IP). Despite a rocky summer, he was a late addition to the US team for the 2024 Premier 12. He made two appearances for the third-place finishers. He replaced Eric Adler with a 5-3 deficit in the 8th against Venezuela. He went 1-2-3 against MLB vets Alexi Amarista, Carlos Perez and Ramon Flores. Dan Altavilla succeeded him. His other outing came versus Japan. Relieving Spencer Patton in the 7th with a 3-1 deficit, he yielded a Keita Sano single. After PR Ryota Isobata was caught stealing, he hit Shogo Sakakura then Zane Mills took over and let the inherited runner score. [3]
