Biographical Information

Arquímedes Caminero pitched four seasons in the big leagues. His fastball was timed at 100 mph.

He was signed by Florida Marlins scouts Fred Ferreira and Enrique Constante and began his career with the DSL Marlins in 2005, going 1-2 with a 5.54 ERA, walking 23 in 26 innings. He returned in 2006 and was 0-1 with two saves and a 7.36 ERA in 18 relief appearances. In 2007, again with the DSL Marlins, Caminero went 2-3 with a save and a 2.83 ERA in 16 games (four starts), striking out 48 batters in 47 2/3 innings. He moved stateside in 2008, splitting the season between the GCL Marlins (14 games), Jamestown Jammers (six games) and Greensboro Grasshoppers (one game), going a combined 1-1 with three saves and a 2.60 ERA in 21 relief appearances, striking out 31 in 27 2/3 innings. In 2009, he pitched for the Jammers (15 games), Grasshoppers (10 games) and Jupiter Hammerheads (two games), posting a combined 3-1 record with a 5.53 ERA in 27 appearances, striking out 61 batters in 40 2/3 innings. In 2010, he pitched for the Grasshoppers and went 5-2 with three saves and a 3.01 ERA in 48 appearances, finishing 22 games and striking out 97 batters in 74 2/3 innings. Opponents hit just .200 against him. Caminero missed most of 2011 due to right elbow surgery; he allowed one run in one inning for the GCL Marlins. In 2012, he was healthy again, appearing for Jupiter (1-0, a save, 0.44 ERA, 27 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings) and the Jacksonville Suns (2 saves, 3.06 in 12 games). He began 2013 well with Jacksonville (5-2, 5 saves, 3.61, .183 opponent average, 68 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings) and was called up to the majors when Steven Ames was sent down.

In his MLB debut, Arquimedes pitched the 8th inning of a 14-10 loss to the San Francisco Giants. He started off by retiring Gregor Blanco and Joaquin Arias. After he hit Marco Scutaro, he recovered to fan Brandon Crawford on three pitches. Greg Dobbs batted for him in the bottom of the 8th. He made 19 appearances with the Fish over two seasons and was sold to the Pittsburgh Pirates in February 2015. His 2015 season was his finest, recording a 5-1 record and 3.62 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 73 games (74 2/3 innings) out of the bullpen. He was on a similar track in 2016 but was dealt to the Seattle Mariners in August, making 57 appearances total with his only big league save and a 3.56 ERA.

The Mariners released him to allow him to pitch for the Yomiuri Giants of NPB. He made a fine debut, going 3-5 with 29 saves and a 2.94 ERA in 57 games in 2017, then regressed hard, seeing time in ni-gun with a rocky 1-1, 5.79 record and only 11 saves in 20 games in 2018. An attempt to catch on with the New York Mets in 2019 proved fruitless, and he headed to the Mexican League.

Caminero became a pitching coach with the FCL Astros Orange in 2022 and FCL Astros in 2023.
