Biographical Information[edit]

Army Cooper was a pitcher for five seasons in the Negro Leagues. He was very successful, going 41-11 in his brief career, but has been overshadowed by teammate Andy Cooper, also a lefty, but one with a longer career.

Army Cooper debuted with the Kansas City Monarchs in 1928, going 5-4. He went 14-4 in 1929 and was 5th in the Negro National League with 88 strikeouts. He tied Slap Hensley for fifth in wins. On June 29, he had a no-hitter through 7 1/3 innings against the Chicago American Giants. Having walked the bases full that frame, though, he was relieved by Chet Brewer, who escaped the jam and completed the combined no-hitter.

Cooper was 15-1 with 103 strikeouts in 1930. He tied Andy Cooper for third in the NNL in wins behind Hensley and Bill Foster and was third in Ks behind Foster and Brewer. In 1931, he went 6-1.

Moving to the Cleveland Stars in 1932, Army went 1-1 to end his career.
