Biographical information

Alex Sanabia was drafted out of high school by the Florida Marlins in the 32nd round of the 2006 amateur draft (the signing scout was Robby Corsaro) and began his professional career that season, playing for the GCL Marlins. With them, he went 3-1 with a 3.24 ERA in 11 relief appearances. He pitched for the Jamestown Jammers in 2007, going 2-6 with a 5.13 ERA in 15 starts fanning 69 in 66 2/3 innings. In 2008 with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, he went 5-5 with a 4.93 ERA in 19 starts. With the Jupiter Hammerheads in 2009, Sanabia went 9-5 with a 3.45 ERA in 19 games (18 starts). He began the 2010 season with the Jacksonville Suns, going 5-1 with a 2.03 ERA in 14 starts prior to his June call-up to the major leagues.

He made his major league debut on June 24, 2010, pitching 3 1/3 innings in relief and posting an ERA of 5.40 against the Baltimore Orioles.

Sanabia made headlines in 2013 when he was caught on camera spitting on a ball in a game against the Philadelphia Phillies on May 20th. What made the news was his explanation: "I didn't know spitting in the ball was illegal". He added that he simply wanted to get a better grip and did not know this would give the ball extra movement. Luckily for him, the umpires failed to see the incident, and he was not contacted by League authorities either.

After not playing in a major league organization since 2016, the New York Mets signed him on July 1, 2021 after he went 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA in 6 starts for the independent York Revolution. He was 1-3 with a 4.34 ERA in 12 games (7 starts) between Double A and Triple A and was granted his release following the season.
